HOUSE RESOLUTION

No. 422 Session of 2007

IINTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
    OCTOBER 2, 2007

                                                A  RESOLUTION

      1 Designating the month of November 2007 as "Sarcoidosis Awareness
     2     Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Sarcoidosis is a disease affecting people of all
     4 ages and races worldwide; and
     5     WHEREAS, This disease causes masses of inflamed tissue, known
     6 as granulomas, to form on various organs of the body including,
     7 in rare cases, the brain; and
     8     WHEREAS, The formation of granulomas on bodily organs may
     9 cause failure in the lungs, lymph nodes, skin, eyes and liver;
    10 and
    11     WHEREAS, Sarcoidosis occurs at a higher rate among African

     1 Americans, especially African-American women and young males,
     2 than among other segments of the United States population; and    

     3     WHEREAS, Many people with sarcoidosis have no symptoms, and
     4 this results in the disease going untreated; and
     5     WHEREAS, Currently there is no available means of prevention;
     6 and
     7     WHEREAS, Sarcoidosis treatment and research would benefit
     8 from enhanced awareness; therefore be it
     9     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    10 month of November 2007 as "Sarcoidosis Awareness Month" in
    11 Pennsylvania to help develop greater public awareness of this
    12 disease.
